GM0B
What is GM0B?
GM0B is the callsign that the
contest group of Mid Lanark Amateur Radio Society uses in the major SSB and CW
contests.
The contest group started in the
year 2000 after a chance discussion I had with Phil GM0LIR, this led to a
chance meeting with Derek GM0EEY, who had moved to the island of Benbecula for
a 2 year work contract.
The outcome of these 2 chance
encounters resulted in "The GM0B" a multi-multi contest group of
about 10 core operators who take part in the CQWW SSB contest, and 3 ops
who also operate the CQWW CW contest.
Each year the group sets up our
"contest station" at various locations, for the past 4 years we have
used the scout camp near Stonehouse. We set up all the antennas for the 6 main
amateur bands, and we try and have 6 full power stations on the air for the
48-hour period of the contest.
It is a very exciting time
installing the antennas, setting up the computer network and operating in the
contest, we have been visited by "Murphy" at every one of our contest
locations, but he has never beaten us yet.
H.F. contesting is the
"Olympics" of amateur radio, in some countries contesting is actually
called "radio sport". So if any one is interested in contesting, get
in touch with the GM0B, we are always looking for an extra pair of hands.
